INKHEART (2009)

"There are those, who by reading out loud, can bring characters to life. Out of books and into our world. Most of these Silvertongues ,as they are known, prefer to keep their skills a secret but some do not even know this gift is theirs, until it is too late."
Based on the series of children's novels by German author Cornelia Funke, Inkheart began production in 2006 at Shepperton Studios. Location shooting included Hever Castle in Kent (for Elinor's Tuscan villa) and Albenga, Balestrino, Entracque, and Laigueglia in Italy.  Production was hampered by a studio changeover and the writer's strike and was not released in the US until January of 2009. The film was directed by Iain Softley from a script by David Lindsay- Abaire and starred Brendan Fraser, Helen Mirren, Paul Bettany, Andy Serkis, Jim Broadbent, and Eliza Bennett.

Brendan plays Mortimer "Mo" Folchart, a bookbinder with the ability to make the characters from books leap off of the pages and come to life when he reads aloud. This "gift" proves to be both a blessing, and a curse.

Brendan became attached to the project when he received the book in the mail with a handwritten note from Ms.Funke that read :

Dear Brendan. Thank you for inspiring this character. I hope you can read this aloud to your kids one day.
                                                        Sincerely,
                                                             Cornelia Funke

Brendan has since recorded the audiobook versions of Ms. Funke's novels Inkspell
( the sequel to Inkheart) and Dragon Rider.
